Word 2000 fails to open

Windows XP SP2, IE 7 with OE 6, Microsoft Works Suite 2000 with Word 2000.

I have successfully used Word 2000 from the date of purchase until the
recent round of Microsoft's Security Updates (10 May 2007). In fact I
successfully produced a letter just prior to updating. Since the updates
Word begins to open (gets to the typing page) and then closes with the
option to send a defect report to MS.

I have used System Restore to return to a date just prior to the Security
Updates; No change in the defect symptoms.
I have un-installed and re-installed Word; No change in the defect symptoms.

Can anyone help me out of this predicament?
