Why not just use a formfield for the Job Description?

MS Word Versions affected: MS Word 2000, 2002, 2003 and beyond.
I have a form fields doc that was written by someone else. The document
contains fields and this is working great. However, the original document
also alow the users to go into Unprotect mode and type directly onto the
form.
This is ok providing the user does NOT try and change any of the fields.
The document is a series of tables and the only thing in the table I want
the user to be able to change is the Job Description which is written
directly into a cell in the table and NOT into a field.
Is there any way I can detect whether or not the form is unprotected when
the user starts typing into the form and lock the fields from being
changed
or overwritten and then allow the users to re-enter information into the
fields when the form is Protected?
Thanks for any help given,
Art
