There are tools available on the web that will crack Word passwords (among
others). Use at your own risk. I can't recommend any or direct you to them
but they're there (start with google). While it would be better to get the
password from the former employee, it might be quicker and cheaper to use a
cracking tool.
Please note that I am not advocating any illegal or unethical activity. If
the documents are the property of your employer and your employer authorises
the cracking, and cracking isn't illegal in your jurisdiction, then I'd be
suprised if there's any problem. But if using a cracking tool is illegal or
unethical in your circumstances, then don't.
