I suspect that there's a misunderstanding at the heart of this - my
suspicion is that Tony saw the quote marks around the colon in the OP and
thought that they were the problem rather than the hard space. I don't

that the hard-space-before-colon is an issue that's connected to the
auto-format settings for smart quotes...

You are, indeed, wrong :-)

The hard spaces between colons, question marks, etc., and the preceding
text in French are just one effect of the, rather badly named, 'quotes'
AutoFormat option. There are many language-specific punctuation formats
hidden behind this option - leading upside down question marks in Spanish
are another example.

Many thanks for the correction, and the rest of the useful
information, Tony - it's getting it wrong, rather than getting it
right, that seems to teach me the best lessons.

And apologies for the delay in responding - in the meantime, I've gone
through the upgrade to Vista and 2007 simultaneously. Bit of a shock
but I'm impressed with Word 2007 so far - once I found the old
fashioned styles button in the bottom corner of the styles display.

Whilst installing Office 2007, I loaded in the French add-in - and,
guess what, the hard space is part of the auto format smart quotes!

And part of the change has been to use Agent instead of Outlook
Express so, if it is any consolation, you have the dubious honour of
receiving my first non-OE Usenet post of the millennium.

Thanks once more - and apologies (see why I need the sig?) to anyone
misled by my earlier post.
If you feel that any of the above is incorrect,
inappropriate or offensive in any way,
please ignore it and accept my apologies.
