This is an AutoFormat.

In the dialogue (all versions), select the AutoFormat as You Type tab, and uncheck the Replace as you type: "straight quotes" with "Smart quotes" option.

Very interesting. I often type in French, and that in French (france), a hardspace before a column or semi-column is the correct approach; I never knew that there was a link between disabling the smart quotes and the hardspace.

Assuming Arno has a specific reason for not wanting the hardspace (this convention may not be applicable in certain flavors of French like Canadian and Swiss), you indeed provided him with a solution. Then, Arno would have to run auto-format to restore the normal quotes in French << and >> since they will be " ... " once smartquotes are disabled.

I have checked with some different French (canadian and swiss) and Words behavior is the same of in French France. It is may be too much to expect from MS to take into account such differences.

Thanks for this interesting tips; the GUI of Word might have made a mention of this.
