Document insists on being "Spanish"

A friend has a word document that is clearly written in English, yet
when trying to spell check it, it spell checks in/for Spanish. We
changed the Language under Tools to Enlish, checked and unchecked the
Auto Detect box, cut and pasted the text into a new document, and even
tried it on different computers. It's as if this bit of text is
'hard-coded' somehow as Spanish. How can I Word know that it is
English? When we change the Language, the next time we go to look at
that it has changed auotmatically to Spanish...the setting won't stick.
