this is the way Word was designed to work: the document carries the
language formatting.

Try Ctrl+A, Tools/Language/Set language and choose the language you
want. This may not catch headers, footers, textboxes, etc. but should
take care of the main body of the document. If you find this works for
you, you can record it in a macro so that you can use it more quickly.
