Printer Embedded cpi Fonts

Tom --

1. Thank you for your analysis and light on this problem.

2. I'm sorry to confuse by describing "printer-resident cpi fonts," as
"printer-embedded"

I am not sure what meaning to give your words "printer-embedded cpi fonts".
From the context, I think I would have expressed it as "printer-resident cpi
fonts". By this, I would be referring to those fonts that are present in the
printers read only memory (ROM).

Character has taken a different meaning, that of font embedding. That is a
means of assuring that the recipient of a document in digital form can view
it or print it on their computer/printer and get the same result as the
author did on his equipment.

There are various drivers that can be used: Panasonic KX-P2023, Epson 286,
and Epson FX-80. Also, if you change the printer emulation setting using the
printer's front panel, it will emulate one of the IBM dot-matrix models.
However, it is true that selecting any of these drivers does not result in
the appearance of the printer-resident fonts in Word's font menu. They all
print text as graphics. Only the Generic/Text only driver uses the printer's
ROM fonts. Alas, that driver does not "do" graphics. Also, that driver is
unaware of specific fonts the printer might have (e.g. NLQ, Proportional,
Double Strike, &c). It does have a limited ability if you manually add the
appropriate escape codes in the printer driver settings.

Aside from the Generic/Text only driver, the only solution I can think of is
to either dual-boot the system with Windows 98SE or run Windows 98SE in a
virtual machine such as that provided by VM Ware or MS Virtual PC.

The printer's unprintable regions are set in the driver. I don't know of any
way to change them aside from coding changes to the driver, itself.

Either this is of some, probably scant, help or no help at all.

Is there a fix for Windows XP (Word2000) to pick up
printer-embedded cpi fonts from Panasonic Mod2023
dot matrix printer?

The Windows XP Model 2023 driver doesn't pick them
up.. No other driver is to be located. Fonts are
the standard Courier, Draft and Bold, 10, 12, 15,
17 cpi, etc.
