Re: Why no Tahoma italic?

Tech-Archive recommends: Repair Windows Errors & Optimize Windows Performance

I received a reply much faster than I anticipated. In my query, I quoted
the original submission.

Quote of reply to me begins:

Hi Tom,

That's quite an easy one - the font was designed as a UI font for Windows
and Office and at the time italic was never used in the UI.

I hope the statement about the spokesperson's claim is wrong- no one in
MS'

typography groups would support that claim.

If you compare fake italic using Tahoma with the carefully designed
oblique in Verdana you'll see that there's more to doing an oblique than
a programmatic skewing.

Because we see so much fake italic Tahoma on the Web and elsewhere we
decided to add a true italic to Segoe UI the Windows Vista UI font.

Cheers, Si

Quote ends.

The Si, in case you are not sure, is Simon Daniels of Microsoft. Quoted
with permission.
