Re: Another Chinese font problem

Many people have had the problem but it is not unique to the fonts you
mention. It occurs with any font that is used as bold, for which there is
no actual bold font file installed, if it is printed to a PostScript
printer.

There is no problem when an inkjet printer is used, for example. That is
because what is sent to the printer for rendering is what is seen on the
screen.

Let me start at the beginning:
Windows looks after font rendering to the screen and to the printer. The
job is divided between the Windows graphics device interface and the
printer driver and the printer's own software/hardware depending on
printer type and capability.

If the application calls for a bold version of a font which has no bold
version installed, Windows will rasterise a bolded version of the regular
font for the screen. For ink-jet printers, this rendering is sent to the
printer as well. However, PostScript printers have their own rasterisers.
So, when printing to this printer type, Windows sends the data and allows
the printer to produce the actual page output. This results to faster
printing and frees the computer to do other tasks. Now the problem:
Windows cannot send the data for the bold font because there is no font
file to get that data from.

Next, how to work-around the problem:
There are a few possibilities, each with its trade-offs.

1. Enter the settings for the printer driver and set it to print fonts as
graphics or download fonts as bitmaps.

2. Open the document in Word, check for font substitution and select a
font with a bold for those with bold that is missing.

3. Use the Replace facility in word to change the font for one that has a
bold.

4. Print to a different printer- an inkjet or PCL printer.

Let us know.
