The advice Graham has given you should get you back to square one. Two ways
to make sure you stay there:

    1. Disable adaptive menus. In Word 2000, this means clearing the check box
for "Menus show recently used items first" on the Options tab of Tools |
    Customize.

    2. Be careful with keyboard shortcuts. An excellent way to remove a menu
item inadvertently is to press Alt+Ctrl+Hyphen (the shortcut for
ToolsCustomizeRemoveMenuShortcut) and then click on a menu item. For
example, if you were trying to insert an em dash (the built-in shortcut for
which is Alt+Ctrl+Num- [that is, the minus or hyphen key on the numeric
keypad]) and used Alt+Ctrl+Hyphen instead, found that nothing (apparently)
happened, and so went to Insert | Symbol to insert it, what you would have
done was delete the Symbol entry from the Insert menu.

Note, too, that there are ways to work around missing menu items. For
example, you can bring up the Print dialog with Ctrl+P. You can also restore
missing menu and toolbar commands: see
    http://word.mvps.org/FAQs/Customization/RestoreMenuCmd.htm. And if you have
chronic problems with missing menus or toolbars, see
    http://word.mvps.org/FAQs/AppErrors/MissngMenusEtc.htm
