Disappearing menu items

My MS-Word 2000 (Win-XP) weirdly bugs me with standard menu items which
mysteriously disappear. I have the print button icon in the toolbar but no
more PRINT command under the file menu (so I cannot choose printers or set
their properties). Same way with the SYMBOLS item under the Insert menu.
What in Word's world is going on here? These things have the habit to slink
away just after I accessed them... No other installation of Word has ever
done this to me. Does my Sony Vaio laptop come with a cheapo budget version?
