It would help to know more details about what you see as the printer prints.
e.g. Are there any error messages?

Also, the circumstances. e.g. Has this printer ever worked properly with
this computer with the present operating system and printer driver?

And, have there been any changes to the hardware attached to the computer?
Any new software installed including anti-virus packages, disk utilities?

Also details of the system. e.g. Is it on a network? Is the printer shared
or local?

And, what Windows version and which printer driver is being used. e.g.
driver from a CD that came with the printer, downloaded from HP's web site.

As an example, what you seem to be experiencing sometimes is seen with HP
printers if Windows 98 is updated to Windows XP.

Let us know.

PS The HP LJ4 is still an excellent printer.
