It must be that you have the new version as a ttf file rather than as a
Microsoft-sourced, self-extracting archive. Tahoma will install from that
archive file without creating the problem you are experiencing. Feint
comfort, I know. Tahoma is supplied with Office and some other MS products.

To install the new ttf file, the old one has to be removed or the file
renamed. This is best done from DOS, not just a DOS window. For that, you
need either a startup disk from a Win98 system or similar. There might be
    something suitable here.
    http://www.bootdisk.com/bootdisk.htm

After you have started DOS using the boot disk, navigate to the fonts folder
    and rename tahoma.ttf to tahoma.tt! and tahomabd.ttf to tahomabd.tt!
or whatever. Make sure you change the extension otherwise the font will
still load and still be called Tahoma in the font menus. These names are
internal to the file and not changed by changing the file name. Or just
    delete the ttf file.

Now, restart Windows and install the new version.

    Let us know.
