Labled numbered list

Tech-Archive recommends: Repair Windows Errors & Optimize Windows Performance

I am preparing a directives template. Each directive will have at
least one reference so I have prepared a boiler plate line:

Ref: (a) "Click here to add referenence name"

The click here bit is just a MacroButton {MacroButton NoMacro "Click
....."}

The paragraph has a style applied with a following style set as
numbered and starting with b. So after the user enters the first
reference and presses enter the following is produced:

Ref: (a) Whatever was entered.
(b) Cursor blinking here.

If it where just me, this would be good enough I think. Well, it isn't
just me so the possibility exists that a user would delete the first
reference line. So I added an AutoText entry (complete with a toolbar
button) to reapply the first reference line.

I am rambling. What I am really inquirying about is a standard for
doing this sort of thing. There are other of examples in everyday
documents where numbered lists are set up this way:

Encl: (1)
(2)

Appendix A
B

etc.

The style separator in Word2003 seems to work, but the hidden paragraph
method in earlier versions hides the first number.

I thought a two column borderless table might be an idea, but having to
mouse click out of the table when all the list items are completed was
awkward.

Just looking for ideas. Thanks.
