Hi David,
It sounds like this is a variation of the "blank document not blank" problem
discussed at http://word.mvps.org/FAQs/AppErrors/BlankDocNotBlank.htm. In
this case, instead of having extraneous text in the Normal.dot template,
your customer has the Vertical Alignment setting in File > Page Setup >
Layout set to Center instead of Top.
He should open Normal.dot as discussed in the article and change the setting
to Top. Insert a space character on the document page and then delete it --
this "dirties" the template and makes sure the file gets saved. Then close
Word and reopen it, and all should be well.
