New doc page size wrong

Using: Word 2003
Problem: When I open a new document, the page appears
less than 8-1/2x11. I have to click into the footer and
back out and it resumes normal size. I check the page
setup and everything looks okay. This just started
happening after I created an extremely small page size
setup for one document.
