Re: Numbered paragraph styles

Tech-Archive recommends: Fix windows errors by optimizing your registry

The List Number styles should be linked to an outline numbering scheme using
the method described in
http://www.shaunakelly.com/word/numbering/OutlineNumbering.html. It will be
a separate outline-numbered list from the headings. There is no way to make
them behave if they are all defined independently using the Numbered tab.

BTW, numbering for the List Number styles uses the numbers in the Numbered
tab. The Heading styles are numbered using the Outline Numbered tab... if
this makes any difference.

If all the styles you mention are part of the same outline-numbered
list,
then you should have higher levels before lower levels. If you have a
combination of heading styles and list styles (that is, some of the
styles
you mentioned are actually heading styles), then you can still make the
heading styles and list styles part of the same outline numbering scheme
(if
you make the list numbering a lower levels than any of the headings,
then
the list numbering will restart after *any* higher level). If you have
heading numbering and list numbering running independently, you should
still
not be having lower levels that don't follow higher levels. Can you
clarify
exactly what sorts of things the a), 1), etc. numbering is attached to?

If all else fails, sometimes you just have to restart numbering manually
(right-click in the first list item and choose Restart Numbering).

Thanks for your amazingly quick response, Suzanne.

Ok. I did everything according to the link you posted. This makes the
Heading # styles right. The list number styles below, still do not
start
with
the correct first number. These styles cannot be linked to a single
previous
style because they could be after any of the Heading # styles or even
Body
text 1 (through) 4. Next?

Make sure that the styles are all part of the same outline-numbered
list,
with each level set to restart after the previous ones (and each

I have read the previous issues on numbering, but none of it seems
to
help.

I have five numbered paragraph styles, "List number" thru "List
number
4".
The numbering is a), 1), (a), (1), and i. When applying these
styles
after
a
higher level paragraph, they do not start at the correct first
number.
Is
this just a quirk of Word.
