Tech-Archive recommends: Fix windows errors by optimizing your registry

Make sure that the styles are all part of the same outline-numbered list,
with each level set to restart after the previous ones (and each level
linked to the appropriate style). For tips on setting up unbreakable outline

I have read the previous issues on numbering, but none of it seems to
help.

I have five numbered paragraph styles, "List number" thru "List number 4".
The numbering is a), 1), (a), (1), and i. When applying these styles after
a
higher level paragraph, they do not start at the correct first number. Is
this just a quirk of Word.
