Cross-references are actually REF fields. Press ALT+F9 to display
field codes. They look similar to the following:
{ REF _Ref81188795 \r \h }
(Note that the part with numbers is a bookmark automatically generated
by Word; it will be something different for your fields.)
Now, you have to add \* lower to the end of each REF field. In other
words, you change each field code to look something like this:
{ REF _Ref81188795 \r \h \* lower }
When you are done, select the entire document and then press F9 to
update display of fields. Finally, press ALT+F9 again in order to
display field results.
