Word 2000 Styles vs Later Version's Styles

In Word 2000, If I start a new style, and then decide to
tweak a paragraph that uses that style, I can update the
style just by re-assigning it to that paragraph and clicking
"Ok" to the dialog that comes up. Nice.
At work, we have Word 2002, and the Styles handling seems
much more cumbersome. Am I missing something?
Is there a [reasonable] way to make 2002 behave like 2000?
