Pasting text into Word 2007

I'm copying and pasting Project Gutenberg eTexts into a text editor, taking out the hard returns inside paragraphs, then copying and pasting that into Word. I can't figure out how to get the quotes and apostrophes to change to smart quotes, and the double hyphens into m-dashes. I have it set in the options to replace straight quotes with smart quotes, etc., but that doesn't help.

I'm using Windows XP SP2. Thanks for any insight.

copying text from MS Word -- a little problem..
... when copying text from MS Word into VS, even if quotes are NOT smart quotes they get translated as smart quotes in VS.. ... if I copy same text to HomeSite quotes come out straight, ...
