The small characters are formatted as superscripts. Select them and
press the Ctrl+Shift+= shortcut, or go the long way through the menu
Format > Font and uncheck the Superscript box.
If you don't want Word to automatically format the letters (ordinals),
go to Tools > AutoCorrect Options, click the AutoFormat As You Type
tab, and uncheck "Ordinals (1st) with superscript". You may also want
to uncheck most of the rest of the options there -- see
