I am using the software that came with the scanner. Canoscan I think is the name of it. I am at work now so I can't try your suggestion out right now. What I think will be the problem is that I think the doc that I want to scan is longer then the scanner?

What scanning program are you using? You should be able
to configure the paper size from letter to legal on the
scanning options.
Or, if does scan is as letter, when you're in Word
go to File|Page setup| Paper and change the paper
size to legal.
