I seem to have solved the problem. Following a suggestion I found somewhere
in a Microsoft site, I right-clicked on the desktop and hit Properties to
bring up the Display Properties dialog. Then I clicked the Advanced button
on the Settings tab, and on the Troubleshoot tab of the Dialog that
appeared, I moved the Hardware acceleration slider down one notch. When I
pressed OK I had to reboot. But thereafter the problem seems to have been
fixed.
