Some guesses:
Try turning off Autoformatting using built-in heading styles.
Go to Tools->Autocorrect options->Autoformat as you type and uncheck
"Built-n heading styles."
Also, uncheck all boxes under "Apply" in Tools->Autocorrect
options->AutoFormat.
Motto of Microsoft Word:
Yours not to know the reason why,
Just to learn it on the fly.
