I hope someone else has a better answer, but in my experience the
_only_ way to extract an image from Word and retain its original
quality is to:
1. Copy the image in your Word document.
2. Paste the image into MS Photo Editor.
3. Copy the image from MS Photo Editor.
4. Paste the image into your favorite graphics program, such as
Photoshop.

MS Photo Editor is not normally installed with a typical installation
of Office; if you have a version of Office prior to Office 2003, you
will have to use the original installation CD and manually find and
install Photo Editor.

If you have Office 2003, you do _not_ have MS Photo Editor at all.
In this case, I do not know of _any_ way to extract an image from Word
and maintain its original quality. The supposed replacement for Photo
Editor, called Picture Manager, does not preserve image quality.
(Even the hopeful-sounding procedure of saving the Word document as a
web page, which creates separate files for each image, has to be
accompanied by the caveat "the resulting images may not have the
resolution of the originally inserted images." In my experience, they
are just as useless as trying to copy directly from Word to
Photoshop.)

If you are running Office 2003 _and_ you have access to an
installation CD for a previous version of Office, you may be able to
install Photo Editor from the older CD. This may "break" your
installation of Office 2003. I was able to install Photo Editor from
Office XP and then repair my Office 2003 installation.
