Re: Index (XE) fields not being hidden in Word 2003

Word does have a tendency to be very in-your-face about XE fields when they are present, but ordinarily the Show/Hide ¶ button should take care of this. If it does not, it's because the "Hidden text" box is checked in Tools | Options | View; this is an Options setting, stored in the Registry, and Normal.dot is irrelevant for that type of setting. But I wouldn't put it past Word to enable the View tab check box when a document containing XE fields is opened.

Perhaps "Show Hidden Text" is checked in your normal.dot template.
Clear it there.
