New versions *are* backward-compatible, but old versions cannot always be "forward compatible." In this case, the file format was changed between Word 2003 and Word 2007 (as it also was between 95 and 97), so a converter is required.

In retrospect, why did I not even think about future versions of Word not
being backward compatible.... Thanks for the link. That's my option for
now, so will just have to grin and bear it.
