If you're referring to the words "Caps Lock" that appear in the status bar at
the bottom of the Word window when the lock is on, just right-click the status
bar and click "Caps Lock" to put a check mark next to it.

This did not solve my problem as I may not have stated it fully. There was
a functionality that alerted me when I had the CAP lock key on. It would
come up on the screen as "CAPS ON". This helped me when I was typing so that
lower case words that I was typing as upper case could be quickly converted
to lower case by my disabling the CAP LOCK key. When Comcast took hold of my
computer to repair their internet connection this functionality disappeared
from my screen. I need to get it back as I do not type well and it is a
great help.
Thanks.

Word by itself doesn't have any such function. There is only the Caps Lock item
that is (optionally) shown in the status bar.

You can also go to Office button > Word Options > Proofing > AutoCorrect
Options, and make sure the "Correct accidental usage of cAPS LOCK key" box is
checked. That will turn off the Caps Lock and fix the case if you have it turned
on and you press Shift to type one character (in lower case) and then release it
and continue typing (in caps). This works only in Word and other Office
programs.

I have seen a "CAPS ON" popup when using a wireless keyboard, but that comes
from the keyboard driver and not from Word, and it only appears for a few
seconds after you press the Caps Lock key. If you have such a keyboard, you'll
probably find a setting for it in Start > Control Panel > Keyboard.

Windows also has a built-in application called Toggle Keys that makes a sound
when you press Caps Lock (or Num Lock or Scroll Lock). That's in Control Panel >
Ease of Access > Make the keyboard easier to use.

Finally, you may have been using a third-party utility. There are a number of
them available on the Net; look at
http://www.google.com/search?q=caps+lock+indicator.
