Did you make the split by clicking the Split button, or by clicking the View
Side By Side button?

When the screen is split, the caption of the Split button on the ribbon should
change to Remove Split, and clicking that -- or double-clicking the bar between
the two views -- will remove the split.

If you used the View Side By Side button, click that button again to turn it
off.
