THank you! At least I understand what is going on. I'll continue to watch
this thread to see if a solution is posted. I appreciate your time!

That sounds rather worrying. I'll pass your comments along for observation.

Graham,

I know exactly what you are saying. I administer a handful of
computers at a small company. Some of us have Office 2007 and some
don't. We installed the compatibility pack on the computers of those
who don't. We started getting .wps files all of a sudden. I assumed
that someone had brought a Works file from home and had sent it
around to others in error. I asked the sender where it came from, he
showed me exactly what he did.

1. He opened a .docx extension file in Word 2003.
2. It recognized that it was a Word 2007 document and opened it.
3. He made some changes to the document and saved it.
4. He clicked on File.. Send..
5. When the email opened with the document as an attachment, it
appeared with a .wps extension.

Given your response, I sent the document to myself. I saved the
attachment and changed the file extension to .docx from .wps. It
opened successfully. So, it appears that the issue is that
Word->Outlook is changing the extension, not the actual format of the
document.

Thanks.

wps is a Microsoft Works document type. There is nothing in
Microsoft Word that will create wps format files from docx and
e-mail applications don't have the ability to change the format of
attachments, so whetever is happening, it is not that the document
is being changed. My guess is that the recipients of your
attachments don't have Word 2007 and Windows is mis-reporting the
document type - probably because they don't have Windows Explorer
configured to display filename extensions. DOCX for users who don't
have Word 2007, would be seen as a compressed ZIP-like format.

If you wish, you can e-mail a document to my web site feedback link
and I will have a look at it.
