Anyone have any ideas?

I have installed the Oracle version 9 client. the actual database is
Oracle 8.

It sounds like the limitation you're hitting is not in the Oracle 9
Client, per se, but in the ODBC Driver associated with it. My best
guess is that Word is setting up a somewhat different Environment
than Excel uses, and that the ODBC Driver doesn't support all the
differences. "Free" often doesn't lead to "fully featured."

You might try using one of the ODBC Drivers for Oracle from OpenLink
Software. The Single-Tier "Lite Edition" for Oracle 9 [1] will be
needed for use with the Oracle 9 Client you have installed. The
Single-Tier "Express Edition" [2] will only work if you're targeting
Oracle 8.1.7.4 or later, as it is self-contained and doesn't make
use of the OCI client you have already installed. The Multi-Tier
"Enterprise Edition" [3] is probably not appropriate for you, unless
you have many client hosts or significant need for security and/or
centralized administration features.

Each of these links will bring you to a login/register page, from
which you can download the driver and a 14-day evaluation license.
All features are fully enabled without limitation, other than this
expiration date.

(Mouse to the row of your Oracle instance's host OS, in the Oracle
v8 column; then click on the exact version of the Oracle host OS.
You'll choose your ODBC client host OS on the next page.)

Up-and-running support may be found through OpenLink's online Support
Center and Case System, http://support.openlinksw.com/, or the new

I hope this proves helpful.
