Re: Jpg. where have you gone??

OK, I'm sorry I didn't understand that I could bring up this program I
thought it was only in the choice file. Thanks, I'll give it a try. I
appreciate your help and patience. Thanks for being there. You helped alot,
especially with the stress factor.

Printto means the compatible application that you want to use to
print that file type from within Windows Explorer.
This command is in Windows Explorer and has nothing to do with Word,
which has never been able to open graphics files directly.
If you add a variety of software to your PC that has graphics
capabilities, then there can be some squabbling over which
application becomes the default for those files. I explained earlier
how to associate file types with applications. The only thing
required is that the application you choose is one that will open
the files, which lets out Word!

Thank you, Graham, for taking time to help me. I know because I am
not computer saavy, it can be difficult. I still haven't figured
out how to do that darn dynamic web page in Excel!! And that Access
data base file linking to be able to change numbers in one and have
it change in the other data base. It's a class I'm taking on
learning to use Office 2003 premium. It has been a bone breaking
challenge, but I am managing to keep a decent grade in it..I hope.
It's hard in some places and taking it online has been part of my
problem with it. I don't think I'll take another computer class on
line as it's too hard to get the help you need when you need it.
Hence, the lower grades.

Ok, if word can't open them, how do I open them? You see, I have
always had the choice of jpg, jpeg and giff in my dropdown menu in
word and now I do not. I don't know what to do or where to open
these files. Maybe I had a fluke but I was able to open these files
in word. At least I think so...maybe I'm not remembering right. At
lest now there's a reason why I can't do it now. But, the
frustration remains... hence, MzFrazzle!!!

back on the first emal I posted, there's a question about the adding
of these file names and the associated program type with the
resulting of a strange word "printto" below "open". What does that
mean?

As I said before Word has never been able to open graphics files -
only insert them.

Graham Mayor, thanks so much! That was part of the problem. I did
both jpeg and jpg and the pictures popped up fine. HOWEVER, jpg,
jpeg, bmp and giff are still not options I can choose in the "open
file" dialogue box from the "file type" dropdown box. I still get
the little grey box with code in it. How do I get the jpg, jpeg,
bmp and giff files back into the choice menu?

Word has never been able to *open* graphics files. You can
*insert* them into Word documents.

What I suspect your problem is has nothing to do with Word, but
that Windows has lost its file association for jpg.

Right click a jpg file in Windows Explorer. Select Open With.
Choose the entry "Choose program" at the bottom of the list

Select Windows Picture and Fax Viewer (or another available
graphics application of your choice) tick the checkbox to always
open with this application, and OK out of the dialog).

I use to be able to open jpg files in word and send them in
emails and I could view all my pictures and documents just
fine. But, after all the upgrades, to office 2003, service pack
2 for windows, etc, etc, etc...I now notice that jpg or jpeg or
giff or other photograph type documents are not even available
in the "open" dialogue box in the "file type" drop down menu.

Where did they go?

How do I get them back?

Where do I go if they can still be seen?

I've tried for over 3 hours to find them and see them, but, to
no avail. Most of the jpg and jpeg, giff and other picture
files are in my documents and they use to open just fine. Now
they sit there with no way to open them because the file type
just isn't in the drop down box! I get this pretty grey box
with a bunch of code on it asking me to put it in some kind of
other mode to see it. Of course none of them work! I have sent
a couple in emails and apparently they go through just fine and
can be seen by the recipients. But, I can't!

I went into tools on "my computer" screen and looked over the
file types and there was only jpeg with "open" and another
strange word under it, "printto", but no jpg. I put as "new"
jpg as a file type and chose jpeg as the file it was like so it
also has "open" and "printto" under it. Neither show up in the
file type dropdown box in the "open" dialogue box when I am
trying to open it in word.

However, interestingly enough it does somehow put a very small
image on the screen when using Word Perfect that you have to
resize like a picture to see it, but the file type still is not
in the drop down menu in word perfect either. I would appreciate
help in solving this delemna.
