Graham Mayor, thanks so much! That was part of the problem. I did both jpeg
and jpg and the pictures popped up fine. HOWEVER, jpg, jpeg, bmp and giff are
still not options I can choose in the "open file" dialogue box from the "file
type" dropdown box. I still get the little grey box with code in it. How do I
get the jpg, jpeg, bmp and giff files back into the choice menu?

Thank you for your help, MzFrazle

Word has never been able to *open* graphics files. You can *insert* them.
into Word documents.
What I suspect your problem is has nothing to do with Word, but that Windows
has lost its file association for jpg.
Right click a jpg file in Windows Explorer. Select Open With. Choose the
entry "Choose program" at the bottom of the list
Select Windows Picture and Fax Viewer (or another available graphics
application of your choice) tick the checkbox to always open with this
application, and OK out of the dialog).

I use to be able to open jpg files in word and send them in emails
and I could view all my pictures and documents just fine. But, after
all the upgrades, to office 2003, service pack 2 for windows, etc,
etc, etc...I now notice that jpg or jpeg or giff or other photograph
type documents are not even available in the "open" dialogue box in
the "file type" drop down menu.
Where did they go?
How do I get them back?
Where do I go if they can still be seen?
I've tried for over 3 hours to find them and see them, but, to no
avail. Most of the jpg and jpeg, giff and other picture files are in
my documents and they use to open just fine. Now they sit there with
no way to open them because the file type just isn't in the drop down
box! I get this pretty grey box with a bunch of code on it asking me
to put it in some kind of other mode to see it. Of course none of
them work! I have sent a couple in emails and apparently they go
through just fine and can be seen by the recipients. But, I can't!
I went into tools on "my computer" screen and looked over the file
types and there was only jpeg with "open" and another strange word
under it, "printto", but no jpg. I put as "new" jpg as a file type
and chose jpeg as the file it was like so it also has "open" and
"printto" under it. Neither show up in the file type dropdown box in
the "open" dialogue box when I am trying to open it in word.
However, interestingly enough it does somehow put a very small image
on the screen when using Word Perfect that you have to resize like a
picture to see it, but the file type still is not in the drop down
menu in word perfect either. I would appreciate help in solving this
delemna.
