When you start the alternative version, it has to reconfigure itself and
Windows in order to use it, which can take a while. You should be able to
get around that - see http://www.gmayor.com/Toolbars_in_word_2007.htm ,
however this was written for Word 2003 (Word 11.0) , Word 2000 is Word 9.0)
I would start by repairing Office 2000 (in fact I would remove all of Office
2000 other than Word) from the Windows Control Panel add or remove programs.
This will fix the stalled reset. Then remove the orphan files -
http://www.gmayor.com/what_to_do_when_word_crashes.htm . Then fix the
registry as described in the first link, then restart Word 2007. This too
will take a while to reconfigure. In theory at least they should work
together with Word 2007 as the default.

When installing Office 2007, I was given the option to keep older

Word 2000 won't open. It just tries to open and hangs there. What
happened?
