Re: how do i edit a document copied from an older windows?

no, i am creating an office 2003 word document (copying it from a works word
processor document and making required changes), saving it onto the desktop
as a word file, but it will only open in a wordpad format, not word, thus
losing all formatting. i tried your suggestion of reregistering word, but
this didnt help.

If by the Wordpad format you mean that a document clicked from Explorer
opens in Wordpad rather than Word then this is a file association issue -

Word viewer is not a Word editor. You need Word to edit Word
documents, however recent versions of Works should be able to open
the document directly. Even Wordpad will open it (though will not
be compatible with all aspects of the document).
