Re: combining multiple Word files into a single Word document

the 'end state' document has 12 chapters. each chapter is assigned to
a author. how to combine the 12 chapters into a single document and
build a table of contents for the 12 chapters?

Each chapter needs to start with a Heading 1 style.

Copy/paste each document into one document.

Put cursor at top of file,
Insert; references; table of contents.

Each chapter will show in the toc as long as they start with a Heading 1
style for the first line (click the down-arrow in the box where it probably
says "normal": Left most box in menu area usually), choose Heading 1.
Repeat for each chapter.
