You are scanning in some printed documents and importing the results into Word? Then your scanner software (or any other tool you are using) is doing OCR (optical character recognition) for you. Such software has to do a lot of guesswork to come up with the proper character (and encoding, and language). So you have to go look into the manual / helpfile /webpage of whatever hard- or software you are using which does the OCR.
