I need to open 97 word docs with word xp when i tried it said i had to
install a converter so i did and nothing changed all i get is a bunch of
small boxes

You shouldn't need a converter to open Word 97 documents in Word XP (or
any newer version). Chances are, the document may have been damaged, so
Word XP couldn't "read" it.

Is the person who gave you the documents still able to open them in Word
97?

If you use the "Recover text from any document" option from the file type
list in Word File/Open dialog box can you at least get the text out of the
document?
