If the copy of Word/Office on your desktop computer is a retail version (you
bought it yourself from a store, either physical or online), then you may
legally install it on your laptop as well. If it is an OEM version (it came
installed on your computer), it is licensed only for that machine.

If the latter is the case and all you want is Word, the most economical way
to get it is as part of Works Suite 2005, which includes Word 2002, Works 8,
Encarta 2005, Money 2005, PictureIt! Premium 10, and Streets & Trips 2005.
It is very competitively priced at many online retailers, and there is a $20
mail-in rebate in effect until January 1, 2006.
