How do I automate repetitive entries in a template?

I have Microsoft Office XP and I'm trying to create a template in Word that
will automate repetitive entries. For example, one person's name may be in
the address and greeting of a letter. I would like to be able to type the
name in the first field and have it automatically appear in appropriate
fields throughout the document.

Just to clarify once more, I'm asking about automating repetitive entries in
a locked template with form fields. Mail merge isn't appropriate for my
purposes.
