Word Doc shortcuts not working when MS Word is closed.

I am trying to open Word documents through shortcuts on my desktop. When I
open them I get a message that the shortcut cannot find the file. When I open
MS Word and minimize it, I can open all my Word documents through shortcuts
with no problem. Any ideas what could cause this? I would appreciate any help.
