Another suggestion: Switch to Normal view, and in Tools > Options >
View check the box for Draft Font. In older versions, IIRC, that gives
you a ***-ugly sans serif system font; the newer versions let you
pick any font that's installed on your system. Switching to Page
Layout view gets you WYSIWYG or what passes for it.
