If what you mean by 'traditional location' is on the same 'line' as
the menu bar then you need to be using MDI (Multiple Document
Interface) rather than SDI (Single Document Interface).
SDI was introduced in Word 2000. SDI means each open document utilizes
its own application window/toolbars/menu bar and appears as a task on
the Windows taskbar. To minimize the document use the only minimize
command that is visible - the one on the title bar.
MDI, used in Word 97 and previous versions, means all documents share
the application window/toolbars/menu bar and all open documents appear
in one task on the Windows taskbar. Since mulitple documents are
sharing the same interface each document has its own
minimize/maximize/restore command and the documents appear minimized
in the application interface - not on the Windows taskbar.
Switching the document interface is easily changed by going to
Tools/Options/View and turning on/off "Windows in taskbar".
btw, utilizing the DocMinimize command on a toolbar will exhibit the
same behavior as using the minimize command as I previously described.
