If you're seeing a separate section on the left side of Normal view, this
could be the Style Area. On the View tab of Tools | Options, if the style
area width is set to more than 0", you will have this area in which the
names of the style used in each paragraph in the document is displayed. But
there's nothing like this in Outline view. Perhaps you're referring to the
horizontal line that indicates the end of the document? This is visible in
Normal and Outline views. This is a handy indicator if you don't have
nonprinting characters displayed (see
http://word.mvps.org/FAQs/Formatting/NonPrintChars.htm) because it will give
you a clue if you have a lot of empty paragraphs below the last text
paragraph in the document.
