Word 2002 hangs when accessing my documents folders

I have a number of folders in a file which I call my documents. there are a
large number of files each of which has a varying number of subfiles. the
problem is that when I try to access the my documents folder, word 2002 hangs
up with the hourglass hovering for up to a minute before I can gain access.
Once I selec the file I want there is no problem or hang up or delay. When I
return to the larger my document menu, it hangs again. It is very time
consuming. My secretary has the same size and speed computer as mine but it
does have this problem. I run XP Professional. I tried to uninstall Word
2002 so that I could reinstall it but couldn't figure out how to do it.
