You should ask your correspondents to give you the data in a more
neutral format (text, html, etc.) It's not Microsoft's fault that you
have such inconsiderate friends. Your friends could also obtain (free
or purchase) a tool to make PDF files for you to use the free Adobe
Reader. Talk with them. Explain that it's presumptuous for them to
assume you have Excel.

You also could download the Excel viewer from Microsft's web site. (Free).

You can also consider using OpenOffice from www.openoffice.org that has
a terrific spreadsheet that can handle xls files (and a word processor
that can handle doc files). (Free)

You could also see if you have Works or other spreadsheet application
installed on your computer. Often software of this sort of provided
with the hardware vendors as part of the "package".
