There is no difference in file format between Word 97 and Word 2000. No
conversion is necessary.
The only minor issues might concern macros saved in the documents, which
could produce a macro security warning depending on the macro security
setting.
There is no virus checking in Word. This is a function of your anti-virus
software. If you are running Norton AV, its Office plug-in is a known
troublemaker. You could start by turning off the plug-in from within that
application.
