You can use VBA to test if the document contains footnotes. Press
ALT+F11 to display the VBA Editor. On the View menu, click
Immediate Window. In the Immediate Window, type

?ActiveDocument.Footnotes.Count

and press ENTER. If a number other than 0 (zero) is shown, there
are footnotes in your document.
